Let’s Get Physical Friday: Shredding with Jillian Michaels

I have a confession to make: I’ve fallen off the workout wagon! I had been very proud of my workout efforts for the first several months of the year. I was hitting the gym, or doing home workouts, and running several times a week. I have also been eating better this year, than any other time in my life. I’ve really been on a path to healthier living. I still had cheat days, and weeks where I worked out less than others. But I was pretty consistent… until the last month.

I was playing basketball (which was dumb of me in the first place – I had knee surgery about 10 years ago and tend to get hurt…a lot) and twisted my knee…. the one I had surgery on. It was tender for a few days and I was terrified to do anything. So I took a couple of weeks off. I’m feeling much better, but have been very busy and just haven’t been able to get back on the wagon. Tomorrow will be three weeks since I’ve worked out, except for a few walks and a little bit of dancing at a wedding.

It’s amazing how short a time period can change how you feel about yourself. I haven’t been eating as healthy and I haven’t been working out. I feel like a blob. Others may not notice it, and tell me I’m crazy (which they do), but it doesn’t matter how they see me, it’s how I feel about myself.

So tonight, I’m getting back on the wagon. I’m going to shred with Jillian Michaels.

30 day shred

I have incorporated the 30 Day Shred into my normal workout routine the past few months, but never did it hard core. I would do it once or twice a week, not the 30 days as recommended….until now. I am still nervous about running on my knee, even though I’m not sure Jillian’s high intensity workouts will be any better for it. But I’m willing to try, to at least get me back in shape. And let me tell you, I AM OUT OF SHAPE after three weeks off.

I did the first workout tonight and my arms and legs were killing me! I will be sore tomorrow, but am going to push through it.

The workout includes 3 levels. You do each level for 10 days.

In the past, I’ve only done level 1, so I’m interested to see how the other levels go. I’m also interested to see how my body transforms after 30 days of hardcore workouts. I know I will probably be the only one to notice the changes, but again, I care how I feel about myself, rather than if others notice.

My only concern is actually getting in a workout for 30 straight days. There are some days when I don’t get home until 9 or 10 p.m. and want to grab a quick bite to eat then go to bed. But I am keeping a list of days I get the workout done, so hopefully I’ll keep myself honest. Day 1 is in the books. 29 left to go!

Let’s Get Physical Friday: Electric Run

Hi! Happy Friday! It’s been a while since you’ve seen one of these huh? Don’t worry, I haven’t fallen off the wagon. I’m actually quite proud of myself. Going on July and I’m still going strong on my workout regime. I’ve made some changes to my workout plan over the past few months. Have had to change eating habits, workout routines, and I’ve even made my own little arm workout that I am a little proud of.

I’m still running. I’ve been in kind of a slump this month. I’m stuck at 2 miles and worn out after every run. But I’m still running a couple of times a week and hope to keep adding to my mileage.

This time last year, I was training for my first 5K that I was going to run in (I normally just walk with my mom). I was training for the Color Run. It was fun and the first of my novelty runs.

This year, I’m running because I love it, not because I have an end goal. But when my cousin found the Electric Run, I had to say yes. Check out this video from YouTube:

Well we signed up. Made a family event out of it. My cousin (sister) Lisa and I planned to run. Our cousin Alex ran with us and brought his cousin Mitchell.

Oh and we stayed with a family member in Columbus too. Super fun family time.

We bought tons of glow  in the dark goodies at the Dollar Store. Let me just say, they don’t glow as well as the ones they hand out at the run. We had necklaces, hats, bracelets, glasses…. the necklaces and bracelets were all that made it with us to the run… Have you tried to put together a glow stick hat? It’s nearly impossible.


As the sun started to go down, the vibe started to pick up. They were pumping loud techno versions of today’s popular songs. People were lined up ahead of us and behind us. And you know me, I was dancing from the second we lined up. Which meant I burnt tons of calories because we waited in line for 40 minutes.

We thought the race was starting at 9:20. Well let me just be honest and say it probably wasn’t a good idea to have a night race on the longest day of the year… just a thought. We didn’t have anywhere to be though. The race started around 9:40. We were in the 3rd wave, so we started around 9:50.

We thought the race was going to be indoors and outdoors. We were wrong. We were at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. We ran through the parking lot. I was a little confuzzled. It was dark, there were people everywhere. I had no idea where I was.

Mitchell and I partnered up for the run and Alex and Lisa partnered up. It’s hard to run in groups in big races like that. It’s almost impossible to stay together while passing walkers. Not to mention it’s almost pitch black out except for the areas where there are lights… and the glow of sticks.

There weren’t as many “glow” areas as I expected. Seemed like they were every half mile or so. In between though it was dark and you really had to pay attention to your footing and the people in front of you. Some people went down. Others just stopped right in front of you.

When the race was over, there was a little setup where someone took our pictures:

Oh and fair food and a rave. The rave was fun… very loud… the vibrations from the music were crazy. There was also beer. Not a smell I look forward to after a hot, sweaty run.

I will say that with these novelty runs, time isn’t of the essence. This race wasn’t even timed. I timed myself with my Nike+ app, but we stopped several times to take pictures, so we didn’t have a very good time at all. But we learned that in the Color Run and know that these novelty races are more about the fun than the race.

I would definitely do this race again. I think I like it better than the Color Run because I didn’t get dirty :) And running at night was a nice change up. Waiting at the starting line was by far my favorite part.

Let’s Get Physical Friday: A Quick Workout

Happy Friday friends! Hope you’ve had a great week! This week was spring break at Marshall University, so the Rec Center had limited hours and no classes. BUMMER! But I did some fun stuff. Got in a great interval workout on the treadmill and two other days of getting in quick mile runs and arm workouts. I feel like I am getting guns. Get your tickets ladies and gentlemen!

Now we all know that even though we really want to work out and find and make the time to do it, we don’t always have time to get in a long workout. As much as I love to run, I don’t always have time for 45 consecutive minutes to work out. Sometimes I just have a few minutes in the morning and a few minutes in the evening. So it’s always nice to have those quick workouts.

My favorite quick workout is the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred. It’s a 20 minute workout that mixes up cardio, abs and strength. As many times as I do it (which is 2-3 times a week), it still kicks my butt.

But even as much as I love it, I have to change my workouts up.

Some things that I do every night, no matter how much time I have, I always do 50 squats, a little bit of abs (whatever I feel like that day…. sometimes they are crunches, and reverse crunches, and the bicycle, or whatever else sounds fun), and some pushups (these vary from 10-45 depending on how my arms feel). I can get that done in 5-10 minutes and always feel great after it.

So where is the best place to find a quick workout? Where’s the best place to find anything? Pinterest! Duh!

Soooo Happy Friday! Hope you are having a great week. This Friday’s post is going to be short and sweet, like my workouts and my mood this week. Yesterday I compared myself to grumpy cat.


This has been a week of ups and downs for me. I did Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred Saturday, Sunday and Monday. By Monday, I felt like it was getting easier. Normally I do it only once or twice a week. I think if I did it for 30 straight days, I would definitely feel it.

Tuesday I got sick and couldn’t work out. I was in bed for 12 hours.

Wednesday…. well Wednesday we tried something different. We tried a Yoga Body Burn class. It was the first yoga class my workout bud and I took at the rec center at Marshall. We had hoped that Body Burn meant Power Yoga. We were wrong. This was very mind, body and soul, but it was a good workout. We focused on balance. While it wasn’t what we expected, the class actually went very well. I have done a couple of DVDs and online videos, but nothing in a real class setting. I was nervous at first, but by the time the class was over, I felt very comfortable and relaxed. Now that it’s been a couple of days, I’m still having a love/hate relationship with this class. I felt great, but I am not sure if this calm and collected suits my personality. I normally do high impact exercises that boost my mood. I was calm, but then felt like I fell into a well and couldn’t get out of it. I am absolutely not throwing yoga out the door, but will need to mix in some other workouts if I stick with it in the future. And the class is only offered on Wednesdays, which I normally spend with my friend and here babe, so we may have to change our schedules a little to work yoga in a little more.

Thursday, I was super lazy. I got in some steps at the mall, then all I wanted to do was sit in bed and watch Psych and knit and work on my blog. So this week Tuesday and Thursday are my days off. I have to work late tonight, so I will either get in a late workout when I get home, or a double long workout Saturday morning.

I think the thing I learned this week was that I definitely like high impact, high calorie burning exercises. I love the feeling after a yoga workout, but can’t rely on that for a mood boost, which I count on after workouts. I am too high energy for my own good.

I also think when I’m in the need for yoga, I may work in the Jillian Michaels yoga DVD. It was one of the first workouts I did when I decided to get fit this year and love, love, loved it. Do you guys have any yoga suggestions for me?

Let’s Get Physical Friday: Motivation

Happy Friday! I don’t know about you, but it’s been a rough week for me! Saturday and Sunday, I had pretty good workouts at home. Monday I went to a class and Tuesday I ran 3 miles on the treadmill. But then it all went downhill. Wednesday, I couldn’t get full. I was starving. Maybe it was because I had 900 calories left over on Tuesday, or maybe I just love food too much. Thursday, I took the night off to get my hair done (I’m a blonde now). And tonight I will be on the road all evening, so no workout again. Hopefully I can get back on track tomorrow. Maybe a little something will be better than nothing.

But when you have bad weeks like these, we all need some motivation. I have found a lot of motivation the past couple of months on instagram. I am constantly saving pictures and making them my background. This is my current phone background:
