AnnAlysis: The Luxe

I am not going to lie, the first thing that attracted me to this book was the cover. It’s beautiful! And I have a tendency to love books about the filthy rich. It’s a life I’ll never know, but at least in these books, I can get a feel for it.
This book is about a group of teenage girls in 1899. They live fabulously in New York. The main character is Elizabeth Holland. She’s perfect, in every way… well almost. There’s a bit of a secret, which ends up being the death of her. The other key players in this book are her sister Diana, her best frenemy Penelope, two of her family’s help, Lina and Will and the ever popular bachelor, Henry.
I wasn’t sure how much I would like this book because although I knew it was about wealthy, spoiled young ladies, I didn’t know about the writing. I was worried it was going to be written like it was in 1899 and I would be confused about the language. Yes, I know English was the language spoken, but a lot has changed since then. I was pleasantly surprised that the story is set in 1899, but it’s written as we would tell it today. And I loved that!
This book is very much like Gossip Girl of the late 19th century. There are love triangles, filthy rich and all kinds of drama.
I did figure out the end, actually pretty early on, but the book still kept me turning pages, because there was a little twist in the plot every few pages.
One thing I really loved about the book was that at the beginning of each chapter, there was a little blurb. It was either a blurb from the society pages, a “What is expected of young ladies” column, or a letter. Each one gave you a little hint of what to expect in the upcoming chapter. I thought this was really cute. I love that the US Weekly’s of today were the Society Page blurbs of 1899.m
I am very excited that this is a series. I have a few books lined up and probably won’t get to the rest until after Christmas, but they are on the top of my Christmas list and I can’t wait to see how the others pan out. Hopefully, they’ll continue to please.
I give The Luxe, 5 bookmarks!
Teaser Tuesday 11/3
For this week’s Teaser Tuesday, I just started a new book and even though I’m only on page 30 something, I already found TONS of teasers. I’ll start with one towards the beginning though.
The Luxe pg4: “They stood with downcast eyes, waiting for Henry Schoonmaker, who emerged last. The refined mourners could not help a little gasp at the sight of him, and not only because he was usually so wickedly bright-eyed and so regularly with drink in hand. The tragic irony of Henry appearing as a pallbearer on the very day when he was to have wed Elizabeth seemed deeply unfair.”
I am loving this book already. I can’t wait to have some more time to sit down and read. What are you reading?

Got for my birthday:
The AP Stylebook is a journalist’s best friend. Has all the tips for the possible problems you’ll face. I hadn’t gotten a new once since 2005. It was time
I saw this at Borders and since I was on a grammar kick with the Stylebook, thought this would go hand in hand. Plus, I hate seeing mistakes in books, I don’t want to make them myself.
I got a Borders gift card yesterday (a late bday gift), so tomorrow I plan on going to the mall and spending every last cent!
Bought from the Bookstore:
This is a book I’ve wanted for quite some time. The beautiful cover had so much appeal. I got a 30% off coupon for Borders, so I splurged on my birthday and got it REALLY cheap! I’m super excited. Have heard VERY good things about this.
I have a book set and double book from Amazon.com on the way as well as one I won in a giveaway. Can’t wait to put them up here. I’m excited about them all
