AnnAlysis: In Front of God and Everybody
April Grace is a country girl through and through. She has a hatred for the wealthy since being made fun of by a rich family when she was younger. So when a couple cruises up in a Cadillac and says they’re her new next door neighbors, that’s just the start to her rocky summer.
In April Grace’s stressful summer, she also has to deal with her wannabe movie star sister Myra Sue and her grandma’s new boyfriend who April Grace is very suspcious of.
But this stressful summer may be the one in her life that she learns the most. Not only about other people including her parents who are still very in love, but also about herself.
I chose to read this book because I thought it sounded like a fun, quick summer read and that’s just what it was. Yes, there were some touchy parts and I may have shed a tear or two for April Grace, proud of how much she grew up in one summer. But this book takes you back. McCrite did a great job of making April Grace a character that you can relate to. I may not have grown up way out in the country, but I did grow up in a small town. I felt like I could relate to April Grace with what she was going through in that time in her life. It may have happened at a different time in mine, but it happens to everyone.
Lately, a lot of times when I have read YA books, I find myself despising the characters. I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with them, but I feel with some characters, I am finding them immature. Maybe I am growing out of these books a little. But my point for bringing this up is that I didn’t feel this way with Amber Grace. Yes, she’s a growing teeny-bopper, but I liked her and wanted to spend some more time with her.
I give In Front of God and Everybody 4 bookmarks.
