April Bowers is not one of the popular kids. At least not last year, and not so far this year. But that’s all about to change. It may have started with a little lie, that yes, she was a new girl. And that little lie got her a seat at the cool girls lunch table, but it also got her a lot more.

It got her a set of strict new rules that her “friendship” was based on and it was a pact she signed in blood. Well, not really blood, but close enough, blood red lipstick.

And when April has finally had enough of Queen Bee Britney, she forms her own little clique to put all the mean girls in their place.

While reading this book, I felt like I was reading the sequel to the movie Mean Girls. A new girl, sort of, gets in with the popular girls, there’s rules to live by, when you break the rules, you’re out. When new girl is out, she does everything she can to bring the popular girl down.

But I’m not complaining about the similarities. I absolutely loved Mean Girls and still watch it every time it’s on. And I was pretty fond of the book as well. We all had those kids in school who bullied us around. We did, and maybe still do, things for friends that in hindsight we probably shouldn’t have. And we can all relate.

Yes, this may be a little hard core, with specific rules, but hey, we all know pacts are made at schools. Remember the pregnancy pact that one group of girls made in high school? It happens!

But back to the book, The Lipstick Laws is a very cute book. It takes you back to a time you may or may not want to remember and makes you glad you’re out of that time in your life. But it’s also a book that is so creative and well thought out. The “lipstick laws” are fantastic, for anyone who doesn’t have to abide by them. And these girls are so sneaky. They have little schemes worked up that make a girl proud. I mean who wouldn’t have loved to put their bully in their place just once?

I give The Lipstick Laws 4 bookmarks.
