PostHeaderIcon AnnAlysis: Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares

It’s a new kind of holiday for Dash and Lily. Lily’s family is out of the country, on her favorite holiday, leaving her alone in New York City with her brother, who is preoccupied with his boyfriend. Dash took matters into his own hands - to be alone and is looking for something to get into. He doesn’t have to look long because at Strand, the best bookstore ever, he finds a red moleskin notebook with some instructions, a game of sorts. He passes all the requirements and ends up getting to know Lily through their adventures better than he’s ever known a girl before. Could this be the spark of a holiday romance? Or does the passion fizzle when the game is over?

I fell in love with this book on page 2! If you’re a book lover, how can this not draw you in?

…but mostly I was spending time in the Stand, that bastion of titillating erudition, not so much a bookstore as the collision of a hundred different bookstores, with literary wreckage strewn over eighteen miles of shelves.

As soon as I read that line, I thought of my friend WriteMeg!. Meg visited Strand over the summer. This was the first time I had ever heard of this Heaven and got to see it through her eyes.

Ahhh, doesn’t that just look splendid? I imagine next time I get to New York, I should plan a trip just for Strand time :)

So, I was drawn in at page 2. I read the first 130 pages in one sitting and was so disappointed when I had to go to bed. But I knew I had Dash and Lily in the a.m.

One thing I realized while reading this book is that I am kind of an action girl. I love a little romance, a little, but I love a book with a little bit of action. And it doesn’t always have to be murder and scandal. Dash and Lily had action, in the form of a little adventure. It wasn’t a hard and dark book, but it kept you turning because you wanted to know what happened next with the notebook. I think this little adventure is one that the majority of us book lovers would love to have experienced in our life.

I had heard of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist and knew that these two were written by the same pair. I am definitely going to scope out the rest of their books. I am hoping I will love them all equally and that my love for this one isn’t just because it started in a book store.

I highly, highly recommend Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares and give it 5 bookmarks.

  • I’m so glad you liked this one! It’s been on my list for awhile, but I’ve been a bit skeptical to finally pick it up and read it.

  • Meg says:

Oooh, I cannot WAIT to read this one! The Strand setting makes it that much better. It’s definitely an incredible place, and I didn’t even get to see that much of the bookstore last May. I plan on spending more time there soon! Glad you liked my photos :)
