AnnAlysis: Catching Fire

Katniss and Peeta survived the Hunger Games. The only two to ever survive a single games. Now they are back home and getting ready to go on the victor’s tour to the other districts. Problem is, while Katniss just wanted to save herself and Peeta by almost committing double suicide, the Capitol and the other districts see it as an uprising. Now Katniss must show it was out of love, nothing more, on the tour. But it may be too late.
And to prove that the Capitol doesn’t take an uprising lightly, in time for this year’s games, which is also the 75th anniversary, there’s a twist. For every Quarter Quell they do it a little differently. This year, they bring back past victors. Unfortunately for Katniss, she’s the only female victor from District 12. So it’s back in the games, but this time with multiple alliances.
Along with many other reviews I have read about this book, the beginning of this book seemed slow. It kept me reading because I knew it had to get better and once it did, I couldn’t put it down. And the second games definitely made up for the slow beginning. Although these games were pretty vulgar. There were two or three times that I read while eating and they just happened to be the very descriptive death scenes. I loved this year’s games though. It was very creative and very surprising to me that it didn’t take long to figure out. They are victors though, I should have known.
The one thing I didn’t like about this book, compared to the first one was the ending. I have the third book on my shelf waiting to be read, but for people who read them when they were released, I understand the frustration with the cliff hanger and waiting for the next installment.
I still can’t decide if I am Team Katniss or Team Peeta. I don’t know if I can decide. Katniss stood up for her family, tried to save Rue, saved Peeta and herself in the games. But then again, Peeta saved Katniss from the careers and actually helped them by professing his love. Katniss more used that to win the game than to start a relationship. After this book, I think I am leaning toward Katniss. She once again was a saving grace. This time, throw Gale in the mix and doing everything she can to save Peeta. I am definitely going to have to round out the series to make my final decision. I’m not sure what I am going to do though if they have to go back in the ring. It gives me anxiety every time
I give Catching Fire 5 bookmarks and am still amazed by the mind of Suzanne Collins!
