AnnAlysis: One Amazing Thing

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Release: February 2, 2010

In One Amazing Thing, we get stuck in a visa office with 9 other customers after an earthquake rattles a city. These people are all very different but soon realize they need each other to live. After the quake hits, the group must help one another with injuries, falling debris and failing spirits. As the temperature drops and the sun sets to push through, the group all tells a small story, one amazing thing that has happened in their lives.

Some of these stories showed life struggle, another helped explain to their loved one why they never wanted a pet and one even told about a long lost love that one granddaughter never knew her grandmother experienced.

As with most stories that have a lot of characters, I found myself flipping back through the pages to make sure I knew exactly who was talking.  I have a tendancy to get confused easily :)

I liked this book because I learned about a nationality that I have never really been around. I also felt like I really got to know these people on a personal level. They told their own stories – one that meant very much to them that most had never shared before. They let me in on their life.

This is the kind of book that really makes you think. If there was a possibility you wouldn’t make it until morning, what story would you share? I finished this book on Monday and my review has been delayed because it’s Thursday and the first time I’ve been home since Monday morning due to bad weather. This has given me a lot of time to think about my story. The only story that I feel strong enough about is the evolution of my relationship with my husband. From the night he came to me with his stunna’ shades and asked for my number, to our first date, to the emotional day I left for college, to the night we said I do. This is definitely my amazing story.

Other than confusion through parts of the book, the only thing I didn’t really like about it was the ending. I am not going to give it away, but it wasn’t what I expected.

The book kept me reading and I loved getting to know the characters. I give One Amazing Thing, 4 bookmarks.

AnnAlysis: Petty in Pink

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Release: August 1, 2009

Once again, Rachel Maude takes us into the lives of Charlotte (the prissy one), Melissa (the sassy one), Petra (the hippie one) and Janie (the shy one). If you haven’t read these books before, let me catch you up.  These four girls are put into a group for a class. They all like fashion and make a handbag using all of their ideas. The problem is when they ask everyone to help them come up with a name, POSEUR is written on every form.

In this book, they are working with a famous designer who wants to sell their bag. They have to find someone to show off the bag and the perfect party for it.

This book was cute, much like the other ones, but it didn’t do as much for me. I flew through it, but I wish there would have been more styling. I loved the first book as they worked together on a piece. This was more of high school drama … for the rich and famous.

I do enjoy this series. It always keeps me reading and as childish as it sounds, the pictures are great. There are drawings scattered through the book that show particular outfits the girls are wearing throughout the book. I like having an idea of what the girls look like and their style. Although I can picture them with a description, a picture says a thousand words right?

I give Petty in Pink 3 bookmarks

The 4th in the series, All that Glitters is not Gucci, comes out this spring. I will pick it up so I can keep up with the girls. I am really hoping it takes us back to the fashion side though.

Holy Book Sale!

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

So today I went to my first book sale since I’ve been a chain reader. I used to go to one at the fair (yes, we had a book sale at the county fair) every year, but this is my first big one.

As far as I know, there aren’t book sales at the libraries in Mason or Gallia counties. Or at least, there hasn’t been one that I’ve been aware of.

Today the Cabell County Library kicked off their Friends of Library book sale. I took an early lunch and a short walk to make sure I got there before all the good ones were gone. I really wasn’t sure what to expect, but this is what I scored:

Angels and Demons
Dewey
Pride and Prejudice
Memoirs of a Geisha
Vision in White
Rough Weather
Jurassic Park
Anna Karenina

I was a little disappointed about the Young Adult section. There were a few R.L. Stein books that I read when I was a teen. There weren’t really any new ones that I’ve had my eye on.

All of the books I did get though, I have been looking at, just never got.

I am most excited about Anna Karenina. I have never read it, but heard wonderful things about it. I am also pumped that it is a 1950 edition. Oh, I am a dork.

The best part of the whole experience, my bill was $12.25.  I was so excited to get not only some classics that I’ve wanted to read, but also some new releases.

Profile Pic Update 2/2

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

I have been looking for a new profile pic for over a month now. I just haven’t seen anything wonderful until I was deleting pictures from my phone and found my new one. I took it either on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. It was so beautiful and it’s not a bad picture considering it’s from my phone. I can’t wait until spring comes so I can start finding pretty pictures. :)

Giveaways:
I gave away Truly, Madly and had quite a few entries. The Duty of Love didn’t fare so well. No entries, but if you are interested, let me know. If I don’t hear anything by the weekend, I’ll give it to my church for the church book sale.

Goals for February:
1. Get some reading done for my 2010 Young Adult Reading Challenge
2. Finish up the books I have from publishers/borrowed/contests and read the ones I’ve bought
3. Read 9 books. That may be a stretch. I didn’t realize I read so many in January, but it’s a goal :)

Looking Forward to in February:
Starting the Private series and finishing the Sookie Stackhouse series.
